I am the proud mother of two beautiful little boys--ages four and six. My husband and I are very active with the kids and look forward to every moment we spend with them. In the interest of full disclosure, there are times when the "enjoyment" factor gets a little challenged:)

The other day we were sitting at the kitchen table eating dinner when my four-year old said, "Mom, I want a Snuggie." My husband and I looked at each other with shock and amazement.

After the shock, my husband quickly got back on his proverbial feet and ask our son knew what a Snuggie was. My son quickly answered with "Dad, it's the blanket with sleeves"which he said like he was reading from a script I followed up with asking him how he knew about the Snuggie since he doesn't watch television (with the exception of children's videos when I need time to gain some sanity back). He told us that "all" the kids at school have one and they use them during nap time.

So this got me thinking, how popular is this "as seen on tv" item if my four year old knows about them. So I decided to jump on the Internet to do a little research. What I found amazed mestill trying to determine if it was in a positive or negative way. Here are some facts that I found:

  • The most popular Beatles album of all time sold 19 million copies. Over 20 million snuggies have been sold0
  • An official Snuggie runway show was held in New York City1
  • Just last week, there was a Snuggie film festival awards2
  • According to a New York Times article, the "Slanket" was invented well before the Snuggie3
  • People actually dedicate websites to the this cult hit (The video on the home page is priceless)4
  • The Guiness World Records has a "Largest Gathering of People Wearing a Blanket" categoryand no, I'm not making this up:)5

So where does this leave me? Does my son get his wish and I go out and buy him one of these sleeved blankets you ask? The embarrassing answer is "yes" but with one little side noteI'm getting one for myself too. Hey, if more people bought a Snuggie than bought the Beatles greatest selling album, I'm afraid that I'll be missing out if I don't sit and cheer my son's pee-wee soccer game while ensconced in a fleece blanket!

I am a mother of two and I approve this message

I am just wondering but is "Snuggie" supposed to be a swear word? I ask because according to your hub, your husband and your reaction appears to be well shocked.

Was the term 'snuggie' at some point a sexual reference and now it is a popular name amongst all?

The shock wasn't over what he asked for per say. It was more around the fact that a product has so much commercial appeal, that our 4-year-old son, who doesn't watch tv programming (just "kids" movies), knew about the item.

We would have had the same reaction if asked for a ShamWow:)
